Tooth loss can lead to several different complications in your oral health and function. While you will certainly experience a decreased ability to chew and potentially suffer changes in your smile’s appearance, tooth loss can also have a long-term effect. The structural void created can cause the nearby teeth to gradually drift out of their correct position.

This could cause excess wear and tear on the related teeth in your dentition. In time, the newly compromised tooth enamel could even attract bacterial deposits that foster tooth decay. It’s also worth noting that misaligned teeth are at increased risk of suffering dental fractures.

To prevent these complications and restore the full use of your teeth, the dental office of Dr. Alan Nix in Terrell, Texas might recommend installing a piece of bridgework. This is a pair of crowns fused with an artificial tooth in the middle. It will eventually be anchored in your mouth on abutments formed from the core of the two closest teeth.

Our dentist will create the abutments by removing the tooth enamel from the two closest teeth. A detailed impression is then made of the abutments and any corresponding teeth. This will be sent to our dental lab where your new bridge is made.

Then temporary crowns are cemented over each abutment to protect them while our professional dental lab works to create the bridgework. You will need to come back for a follow-up appointment when you bridge is ready. The temporary crowns will be removed and your new bridge will be cemented in place over the two abutments.
