Community Outreach

One of Dr. Nix’s favorite quotes is

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill

Raising their family of six children in Terrell has given Dr. Nix and his wife many wonderful opportunities to be involved in serving and giving back to their community. For years, their involvement centered around their children and their many school and sport activities. From being Terrell High School Band Parent Presidents to sponsoring local soccer teams, community theatre, serving on textbook committees, being PTO Presidents, to working Friday night football concession stands– they stayed busy!

Now that their children are grown, there is a little more time to serve the Terrell community. Below are just a few of the ways Dr. Nix and his wife are “giving back”:

Dr. Nix is currently on the Board of Directors of the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

As a teenager, Dr. Nix attained the rank of Eagle Scout. It is the highest level of honor the Boy Scouts of America bestows. Only a small percentage of scouts are granted this rank after a lengthy review process. The Nixs are very proud of the fact that all five of their sons also attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

In addition, Dr. Nix serves on the Friends of Scouting Fundraising Committee, raising money to help boys everywhere have the scouting experience and learn leadership skills to last a lifetime.

Dr. Nix is a proud member of Kiwanis. The Kiwanis of Terrell “responds to the unique needs of our community by serving our children”. Dr. Nix loves the golf tournament Kiwanis sponsors each year, and plays despite his less-than-perfect golf game. Cooking pancakes at the annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser is his specialty. Dr. Nix is a provider at “Give a Kid a Smile” day, an event sponsored by Kiwanis to provide free dental screenings and sealants to any child 1-18 in the Terrell area. This event takes place yearly on the first Friday of February, which is Children’s Dental Health Month.

Dr. and Mrs. Nix are yearly Home Sponsors for the Social Science Club’s largest fundraiser, the Christmas Tour of Homes. Mrs. Nix is an active member of SSC and will serve as its President beginning in May 2016. The Social Science Club was founded in 1894 to raise funds to benefit civic and educational projects. In addition to awarding scholarships to Terrell High School seniors, the 2015 SSC grant recipients were the TISD Academic Excellence Foundation, Share Center, E-Terrell, No.1 British Flying Museum, Hulsey Library, Terrell Heritage Society and the Terrell Animal Shelter.

The importance of quality schools and a good education is one of the values Dr. Nix feels a deep commitment to. In addition to being highly involved in his children’s education (the Nixs have had children in schools continually since 1982!), Dr. Nix has gone into TISD and surrounding schools to speak for many years. Spending time with kids is one of his favorite things to do. Our office is always glad for the opportunity to serve and assist schools in any way we can.
